New Delhi: In the midst of widespread concern and condemnation surrounding a string of deepfake videos, Alia Bhatt, the acclaimed actor, has become the latest addition to the growing list of celebrities impacted by this technology. Previously, deepfake videos featuring various celebrities such as Rashmika Mandanna, Kajol, Katrina Kaif, and Sara Tendulkar had surfaced online, raising alarms about the potential misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The most recent video depicts a woman making inappropriate gestures, with her face digitally altered to resemble that of Alia Bhatt.

The dissemination of these videos has triggered widespread concern regarding the production of deceptive content targeting public figures and the potential of AI to generate misleading deepfakes on a global scale.

The government has declared that the generation and dissemination of deepfakes are subject to a substantial penalty of ₹1 lakh in fines and a three-year imprisonment.

Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar announced last week that the government is in the process of appointing an officer to take appropriate action against such content.

Mr. Chandrasekhar emphasized that existing laws and rules contain clear provisions for addressing deepfake-related issues.

He further stated that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity) will launch a website where users can report concerns related to IT rule violations. The Union Minister stated, “Meity will assist users in notifying it about violations of IT rules and help them in filing a First Information Report or FIR.”

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed concern about the misuse of AI in creating deepfake videos, describing it as a “major concern.” He underscored the importance of responsible technology use in the era of Artificial Intelligence.
